About the Author: Wayne
Wayne Fleming is an established illustrator on the Sunshine Coast.
Early milestone commissions include caricatures for the Norwood Football Club, a prominent SANFL team, during their history making Grand Final win in 1984 and T-Shirt print designs for Golden Breed, which quickly led to him working for a great many years in the Screen Printing Industry specialising in fashion and commercial print design.
During the same period he also diversified Sign writing, Graphic Design and a 2 year contract for Surfing Magazine “Waves” with a surf comic called Harvey Wavebanga.
Through the 1990s Wayne was commissioned by The Hyatt Regency in Coolum, Queensland as a regular caricature artist in their popular Village Square which opened doors in the Entertainment sector, extending his popular caricature skills for events from private parties to corporate convention. Since then, this has become a key focus in his services as an Live Cartoon Caricature Artist.
Other highlights in this category of work includes commissioning by The Hamilton Island Resort, Queensland, Summertime in Europe ’98 in Belgium, Holland, Brighton Pier in England, Adelaide Fringe Festival and Woodford Folk Festival.
As a result of working in public, often under extreme pressure, Wayne has developed a “fun to watch” speedy style in his line work.
Wayne teaches cartooning to all ages both privately and at various educational institutions. He now has his own special workshop program, aptly titled, ‘Teach Yourself to Draw’, which uses loose line exercises that produce some amazing results, even in the most artistically challenged students.
Wayne’s illustrative capabilities are as diverse in style as his clients and market demand. This is particularly evident in some of his more recent works in the Permaculture field.
Landscape and structural illustrations and diagrams have been commissioned to him since his successful completion of the Permaculture Design Certificate Course in 1994.
A few highlights were
• the front cover of author Bill Mollison’s, ‘Introduction to Permaculture’
• Two poster size illustrations for the ‘Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant’ Eco-Industrial Park (LAAP)
(A decommissioned US Army weapons facility!)
Wayne’s private collections of fine art include a variety of themes. These range from tribal/mystical themes to Ocean theme murals and Hype Art (A style of Youth Culture Dadaism) which had media releases during it’s exhibition.
